History
Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad, constructed the Bhadra Fort in 1411 AD, which was named after the nearby Bhadrakali temple. The Bhadra fort is also called the Aark Fort as it covers an area of 44 acres. From the years 1411 to 1442, Ahmed Shah ruled the Gujarat Sultanate.
In 1817, the British conquered the fort and used it as a jail until the country gained independence. The fort was rebuilt in 2014 by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the Archaeological Survey of India. Visitors can get an insight into the life of the city's founder by wandering inside the beautiful Fort. It is said that the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, visited the famed fort and blessed the Sultan with the promise that the city will always be prosperous.
Architecture
The interesting fort is an architectural masterpiece, with fourteen towers or minarets, eight gates, and two enormous apertures. During Ahmed Shah's reign, this magnificent fort was used as a royal court. An ancient gateway known as Teen Darwaza was built on the eastern flank of the magnificent fort as an entrance leading to the royal square known as Maidan-Shah. It was an open field with several dates and palm trees that served as the location for the royal games and processions.
The road across the Triple Gateway, which is also known as the Teen Darwaza, leads to Manek Chowk, a mercantile plaza. A royal palace, gorgeous Nagina Baugh, Maidan-Shah, and a royal Ahmed Shah's Mosque are all located in this spectacular city location.
