Read More on Bharat Bhavan
History
The Indian government refocused on supporting the performing arts in the early 1980s, and Ashok Vajpeyi, an IAS officer in the state Ministry of Education, was a pioneer in Madhya Pradesh. Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Bharat Bhavan in 1982. In the years that followed, the institute grew into one of the most important gathering places for artists, scholars, and students from all over the world.
B. V. Karanth, who managed the 'Rangamandal repertory' and staged several Hindi performances at Bharat Bhavan, graced the early years of the institution. In 1986, the "Bharat Bhavan Biennial of Contemporary Indian Art" began, and in 1989, the "Bharat Bhavan International Print Biennial" began. This organization has had a particularly fruitful twenty years, as it has been the driving force behind a variety of activities, including music performances, readings, exhibitions, and film screenings. It has created up to 50 plays, each of which has been seen hundreds of times.
Architecture
Charles Correa, the architect behind Bharat Bhavan's painstaking design, designed the spectacular 1,20,000 square foot edifice. He discovered the potential for a series of terraced gardens on the complex's an outside facade, which would cascade down to the lake. The Bharat Bhavan is a jumble of courtyards, split-level exhibition spaces, galleries, and performance spaces on the inside.
Visitors arrive on the top level and go down a pedestrian spine bordered by a network of courtyards to reach the various areas of the complex. Each curve and place has its personality. Each element of the structure is distinct, but they all flow together smoothly thanks to meandering walkways. An outdoor museum, poetry and music libraries, and a museum all have a place here and are built to take advantage of natural light from three conical skylights.
