Read More on Dada Hari Vav
History
The Dada Hari ni Vav is one of two such vavs in Ahmedabad. It is a five-hundred-year-old vav that was constructed during Sultan Mahmud Begada's reign. There is some uncertainty about the actual year this vav was built. This stepwell was built in the year 1485, according to a Persian inscription on one wall, and in the year 1499 A.D. according to a Sanskrit inscription on another wall.
Bai Harir Sultani, the administrator of the Royal Harem and Mahmud Begada's household lady, created this vav. Behind Dada Hari ni Vav lies her mausoleum at the Sultani Mosque. The cost of constructing this vav was estimated to be around 3,29,000 Mahmudis at the time (money used during those days). In today's money, this sum is more than one lakh rupees.
Architecture
Dada Hari ni Vav has seven stories, each of which is equally beautiful. The stepwell, which is marked by finely carved walls, columns, and pillars, appears magnificent during the day when the craftsmanship can be seen. This vav's architectural style is a mix of Muslim and Hindu influences. On the walls, there are also Arabic and Sanskrit scriptures, as well as floral designs and traditional carvings.
The majority of visitors take photos while standing on the railing viewing the vav below. The stairwell is octagonal, and looking down from the top storey is a breathtaking sight. Going down all the steps and looking up while the sunshine streams in from the center of the vav is equally wonderful. There is a design that appears like a toran or hanging of stone behind the railing of each storey, at the area that juts out.
