History
The glorious history of Eklingji Temple Udaipur is safely recorded in the Ekalinga Mahatmya, a historical text written in the early 15th century. According to the text, the temple was originally built in 734 A.D. by Bappa Rawal. The temple has witnessed multiple incidents of loot and plunders during the reign of the Delhi Sultanate. The original temple and idols were damaged to an extent.
The Eklingji temple was renovated and modified by various rulers of the Mewar kingdom to preserve the glory and faith of the people in Shri Ekling Nathji. The temple was originally maintained by the Pashupata sect, then the Nath sect had the control, and post the 16th century, Ramanandis manages and controls the temple.
Architecture
Eklingji Temple Udaipur has magnificent architecture. The double-storied temple has a colossal pyramidal-style roof and a huge carved tower. The exterior walls of temples are connected with the stairs that directly descend in the water.
You will be greeted by a silver image of Nandi (bull), right after entering the temple. Nandi is considered to be the gate-guardian deity of Mountain Kailasa as per the Hindu religion. Inside the temple, you will also find two other carvings of Nandi in brass and black stone. The four-faced idol of Lord Shiva (Eklingji) is placed inside the main sanctum.
