History

In 1904, a British architect named Sir Winton Jacob built the Gorton Castle Shimla. The architect was popular for beautifully merging the Islamic, Hindu, and western forms of architecture. Gorton Castle was designed in such a way that it goes hand in hand with its natural surroundings. The current occupying land of the castle earlier belonged to Mr. Gorton. He had sold it to Mr. James Walker who donated it to build a hospital. But later another piece of land was given for the hospital and this was used to establish the Government Secretariat.

Architecture

The Gorton Castle is located on the hilltop of thick rosewood and deodar trees. It stretches to an area of 40,000 square feet and is a three storey building, built in Neo-Gothic style. The castle has 125 rooms built with grey stones brought from Sanjauli in Himachal Pradesh itself. The castle becomes magnificent with its beautiful windows, large doors, and tall towers. Its roof was earlier made of tiles, but now it has been replaced by galvanized iron sheets. The balconies are adorned with traditional Rajasthani Jari work.
