History
Many tenants had occupied the Himachal State Museum building after Independence, after the Viceroy, and then various government officials. This was then converted into a museum on January 26, 1974, and was inaugurated by Governor S Chakravarti. It belonged to General Innes and was a small mud-roofed house in the early 1860s. It was later owned by the ruler of Sirmour after General Innes and then taken over by the imperial government. The Himachal State Museum Shimla was built in a unique Victorian-era style and has sprawling lawns surrounding the area. The museum is divided into five main galleries that are categorized into wood carving, prehistoric gallery, archaeology gallery, numismatic gallery, and wall painting.
