The Himachal State Museum situated at the Shimla Mall road is an exquisite museum for old coins, paintings, and handicrafts collected from all over the Himachal state and country. These aesthetics were influenced by the Pahari form of art. The museum is a favorite spot for art and history lovers. The most admired portion in the museum is the doll gallery with bride and groom dolls. Some of the archaeological artifacts are also found in the museum. They include stone images from the eighth century as well. In the earlier colonial times, the museum building has housed Lord William Beresford the former Military Secretary to the then Viceroy of India.

The museum is occupied in an Old Victorian Mansion called Inveram, and has collections dating from the 1860s to the 2000s and depicts the philosophy and art created during this period. It has a rich enviable collection of sculptures, Pahari miniature paintings, Mughal paintings, Rajasthani paintings, wall paintings, contemporary art, bronze, arms, wooden carvings, jewelry, coins, textiles, philately, Gandhi, and anthropological objects. History


Many tenants had occupied the Himachal State Museum building after Independence, after the Viceroy, and then various government officials. This was then converted into a museum on January 26, 1974, and was inaugurated by Governor S Chakravarti. According to the Himachal State Museum Shimla history, the Inveram was carefully modified and adapted to make a museum. It belonged to General Innes and was a small mud-roofed house in the early 1860s. It was later owned by the ruler of Sirmour after General Innes and then taken over by the imperial government. Later it has been handed over to many.

The Himachal State Museum Shimla was built in a unique Victorian-era style and has sprawling lawns surrounding the area. The museum is divided into five main galleries that are categorized into wood carving, prehistoric gallery, archaeology gallery, numismatic gallery, and wall painting.
