History
Ramtek is home to Rama's medieval temple. Ramtek is said to have been the resting place of Rama, the Hindu deity when he was in exile. According to Hindu legend, the Hindu sage Agastya's ashram was located near Ramtek. After his victory against the fort of Deogarh near Chindwara, Raghuji Bhonsale, the Maratha king of Nagpur, erected the current shrine in the 18th century. On his journey to Ramtek in Nagpur, Rama was said to be joined by his wife Sita. Ramtek was given its current name because of the legendary link of the location with Rama.
