History

A.O. Hume, when he was posted in Shimla in late 1850, used the Rothney Castle as his official residence. He was allocated the site by the British government, which he renovated multiple times while he lived there. It is believed that he had spent a massive amount of GBP 200,000 during the time for renovation. This is the place where A.O.Hume began his study of the birds found in the Indian Subcontinent and also document all that information. He even had a huge collection of birds of various kinds from the region.

He even started a Museum in the castle to display the variety of bird species he had acquired over the years in the country. Today, most of the specimens of bird species that were collected by him are found in England.

Architecture

The Rothney Castle Shimla complex is spread over a massive area of 17,500 sq m. The castle is the finest piece of British architecture.
