History

  • The palace was initially constructed by Maharana Sajjan Singh and was completed by Maharana Fateh Singh, his successor.
  • The fort was thoughtfully planned to serve as an observatory for the Maharana because he was fond of observing the formation of clouds during the monsoon season.
  • The Maharana was a very learned and skilled ruler. He planned to build a 9 storied observatory but the plan was put on a back foot when Maharana Sajjan Singh passed away at an age of 26.
  • The young Maharana was known to have introduced major projects in the city like roads, dams, and water conservation projects. He was the one who ordered the construction of the huge man-made lake named Fateh Sagar Lake.
  • His successor, Fateh Singh ordered the completion of the construction of the palace under his supervision. The only catch here was that it was no more an observatory but a hunting lodge for the royals.

Architecture

The rocky white tiara of Udaipur is constructed using white marble. The monsoon palace offers a picturesque view of the surroundings. The palace has spacious and windy balconies. The grand staircase leads to several rooms and quarters. The lower level was used by the royals to store the animals killed during hunting and was also used to house the invaders who were either poisoned or hanged to death. The architecture is purely Rajasthani, which consists of huge domes, jharokhas, and carved pillars. The snow-white pillars that act as support have detailed floral motifs designed on them. The walls too have beautiful designs adding to the undeniable vintage charm of the palace.
