History
In 1572, this classic religious site was commissioned by the Sidi Saiyyed an army general of the last Sultan Shams-Ud-Din Muzaffar Shah III of the Gujarat sultanate. This artwork took a total of 45 skilled craftsmen to complete. This mosque was completed in the last year of their rule between 1572 to 1573. If stories are to be believed, Sidi Saiyyed was a kind-hearted person who came to India from Yemen and worked under the rule of Sultan Nasir-Ud-Din Mahmud III. Later it was invaded by the Mughal emperor. This was used by the Britishers as a government office and now the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) took it under control.
Architecture
The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque Ahmedabad is a fine example of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture built with yellow sandstone. Two minarets on the side of the main entrance make it simple yet attractive. Travelers feel amazed by gazing at the architectural brilliance of the ancient mosque having ten semi-circular jalis which are famous for their amazing latticework. These amazing jalis are believed to have been built with the effort of forty-five skilled craftsmen.
Among the beautifully carved windows, the tree of life window with its magical tree and entangled branches is the major attraction for tourists. For every traveler visiting the city, these jalis make it a must-see attraction. This tree of life makes these jalis popular across the globe and the wooden models of these are kept in the Kensington and New York museums. Earlier this mosque was used as a government office by the Britishers but now is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
