Read More on The Ridge
History
As this town was the summer capital of the colonial era, the ridge was developed by the Britishers as the main purpose of this place was to serve as an area that includes housing and marketplaces. This area was known as the Upper bazaar formerly. The Britishers had a lot in mind to develop this area but the major fire outbreak that occurred in 1876 destroyed this area to much extent. The restoration involved barring Indian natives from the site and making it a settlement only for European citizens. later after independence, this area was developed and built for the Indian natives and eventually became a major tourist hubspot amongst the public.
Architecture
Shimla's novelty lies in its structures, which are part of the background. The majority of these well-kept structures date back to the nineteenth century and exemplify the aesthetic of the time. There still are restrictions on newer buildings being built in key locations to preserve the historic beauty. This historical ancestry is especially visible in the Ridge and Mall Road buildings. The City Hall, Gaiety Theatre, Christ Church, and Viceregal House are also magnificent specimens of Colonial grandeur. There are residential mansions with brilliantly colored roofs and unique features. Several of them are now converted into banks, post offices, and army bases.
