About Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra Ajmer

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra Ajmer was built by Qutbuddin Aibak, the first Sultan of Delhi, it literally means 'shed of two and a half days. The site where Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra stands today was originally a Sanskrit college built by Vigraharaja IV, a famous king of the Shakambhari Chauhan dynasty. According to a tablet found at the site, the original college building must have been constructed before 1153 CE.

The college complex was partially destroyed and converted into a mosque by the Sultan of Delhi on the orders of Muhammad Ghori in the year 1192 CE. The mosque was completed in 1199 CE and it was further beautified by Iltutmish of Delhi in 1213 CE.

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra was designed by Abu Bakr of Herat and it is an early example of Indo-Islamic architecture. It was built from masonry taken from ruins of Hindu and Jain temples nearby, the mosque is surrounded by a seven arched wall that is inscribed with some of the verses from the Quran.

The gate of the mosque leads to a stairway leading up to a small tower from where the muezzin (mosque official) called the people to pray. The front facade of the mosque consists of numerous small arches built of yellow limestone. The main arch is surrounded by six smaller arches of Arab origin, which have tiny rectangular design holes for a lighting system, a feature mainly found in ancient Arabian mosques.
