History
Dandi has a significant historical significance in India's quest for independence from British rule. The Dandi March, also known as the Salt March, was an act of civil disobedience led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in colonial India. Following the imposition of the salt tax by British officials, all salt-producing activities by locals were ruled illegal, a clear violation of the people's rights. In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi picked Dandi as the site of a protest against the imposition of a salt tax, putting the village on the map and giving it historical significance.
The march began on March 12, 1930, in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, with Mahatma Gandhi and a group of 78 persons. It lasted 24 days, till April 6th, 1930. As the march progressed, word of the protest went throughout the country, and Mahatma Gandhi attracted supporters from all over India.
By the time they arrived at Dandi, tens of thousands of others had joined them in opposing the imposition of the Salt Tax. When the Satyagrahis arrived in Dandi, Mahatma Gandhi manufactured salt from the Arabian Sea's waters and addressed his supporters, urging them to use this deed to achieve Purna Swaraj (Complete Sovereignty and Self-Rule). The march sparked a nationwide civil disobedience movement and laid the groundwork for India's independence from British rule.
