History
Originally, Kuldhara village Jaisalmer was inhabited by the Brahmins who had migrated from the Pali region of Rajasthan to Jaisalmer and settled down here. Various records and literary accounts on this village state that Kadhan, a Brahmin from Pali had first made this place his home and also dug up a beautiful pond and named it ‘Udhansar’. The Brahmins from Pali were called Paliwal and from there comes the clan name.
Now come to our main story, as per various records, the village was a jagir or state under Minister Salim Singh way back in the 1800s, who was very ruthless in his ways of tax collection. The taxes paid by the villagers were already too high. After all this, Salim Singh became fond of the beautiful daughter of the village chief and he went as far as threatening the villagers. He made it clear that if they try to oppose him or stand in his way, he would levy even higher taxes. The chief along with the entire village escaped overnight to save the life of his villagers as well as the honor of his loving daughter. Many believe that the residents of the village cursed the place.
Architecture
Kuldhara village Jaisalmer site is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), so tourists can visit this historic village and look around to get a glimpse of how the ancient villages used to be. The village including the Kuldhara region stretches around a vast area, it has about 85 smaller hamlets. Most of the cottages and huts of the villages are broken and in ruins. An old temple of some goddess present there is also in ruins. There are various inscriptions available inside the temple that have helped archaeologists to gather information about the village and its mysterious history.
