History
The 6 feet long lingam is claimed to be “Svyambhu”, that is, a self-originated linga and is said to be thousands of years old and the sanctum holding the lingam is also about 500 years old. The rest of the temple is said to be built later. Mahabaleshwar has a known history that goes back to 1215 AD. The Yadava ruler Singham of Devagiri had explored the nearby area and established the temple that is known as the Panchganga Mandir. He established a wooden tank and a temple around it at the origin of the Krishna River, which is now included in the Mahabaleshwar Temple premises.
Architecture
The shrine is constructed in the Hemadanta style of architecture, gorgeously renowned for its carvings and intricate design. Its former construction can be distinctly noticed as a pyramidal tower sets upon it that has an austere appearance. The carvings that are flanked on this tower can be seen. Various idols of Nandi and Kalabhairava can be seen on the exterior walls of this Hindu temple as these figurines are believed to protect the sanctity of the temple. The beauty of this extraordinary temple is sufficed with the backdrop of lush green Sahyadri hills that gives this place a pleasant and divine setting.
