History
Guman Chand Patwa, who was an affluent merchant from Jaisalmer, had built the Patwon Ki Haveli Jaisalmer in the early 1800s. The Patwa family is said to be one of the most famous dealers of gold and silver embroidery threads. They were very popular among other merchants as the Brocade Merchants, and the haveli complex was also called the Mansion of Brocade Merchants.
Various rumors were spread around that time, that the family was also involved in opium smuggling. Guman Chand Patwa dreamt about building a beautiful haveli in Jaisalmer and commissioned its construction in 1805. With the passing of time, he made great fortunes in trading and decided to construct five separate Havelis for his sons in the very same complex. The entire Patwon Ki Haveli complex took about 60 years to be constructed and it went on to become the largest mansion in Jaisalmer.
Architecture
Patwon Ki Haveli architecture is a fine example of traditional Jaisalmer craftsmanship. The use of yellow sandstone can be seen extensively and, the Haveli also has intricate detailing. Each floor of the Haveli forms a different Haveli with its unique design; the beautiful mansion on the ground floor is the largest of them all. The entire Haveli complex is beautifully decorated with intriguing designs carved into the sandstone.
The massive gateways and arches are intricately decorated. The interior of the Patwon Ki Haveli Jaisalmer is quite fascinating with high ceilings, pillars, and door frames.
