History
Vyas Chhatri was built to honor the sage Vyasa. Vyasa wrote the 300,000 verses of Mahabharata. It is a garden of Jaisalmer's royal family's cenotaphs, called chhatris. In the 16th century AD, Jait Singh II, a descendant of Maharawal Jaisal Singh, commissioned a dam to establish a water tank. This turned the desert in this area green. His son Lunakaran completed the development of Bada Bagh after his death.
Architecture
Vyas Chhatri is a golden sandstone building that serves as an example of Rajasthani architecture. It was constructed to honor Sage Vyasa, who composed the Mahabharata's 300,000 verses. The structure's cenotaph is located to the north. Its architecture is a combination of Paliwal, Mughal, and Rajput influences. Inscribed tablets with the names of the King and Queen can be found on each cenotaph.
A statue of the King on a horse, with his queen standing close, can be found on certain cenotaphs. The size of the chhatri changes depending on the person's position. Along with Govardhan Stambh, this landscape has a tank and a dam (pillar). The pillar was built to commemorate the construction of a nearby tank. The dam is known locally as Jait Bandh, and the tank is known locally as Jait Sar. The Jait Bandh is a massive edifice that is over 100 feet tall.
