History

The lake has a long and illustrious religious and cultural heritage. It is mentioned in sacred Hindu literature dating back thousands of years. Brahma is the most prominent figure associated with the lake. According to mythology, when Lord Brahma murdered Asura Vajranabha, three petals from his divine lotus flower split in three.

A spring was formed in each of their locations, which is known as Pushkar. According to mythology, Brahma later conducted Yagya at the same location. Brahma's wife, however, cursed him at the end of the Yagya, saying that people would only worship him here.

The lake was discovered in the 4th century, according to archaeological evidence. Other historical sources, such as inscriptions on Sanchi pillars and diaries of foreign travelers, also mention it. During the Mughal reign, the lake went through a period of decline, but it later regained its beauty and status as a major Hindu pilgrimage place.
