About Varaha Temple Pushkar


Varaha Temple is a Hindu Temple in Pushkar Rajasthan which was originally built in the 12th century and is one of the oldest temples in Pushkar.  It is dedicated to the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Pushkar Lake is situated next to this temple. The temple is one among the Swayamvyakta kshetra, a group of eight premium temples in which the deities are believed to have self-manifested.

The mythology surrounding the Varaha Temple Pushkar is vast. The meaning of 'Varaha' is wild boar.  According to Indian mythology, when Lord Brahma was performing a Yagya near Pushkar lake, Lord Vishnu in the form of a wild boar appeared there to save mother Earth from the demon Hiranyaksha. 

It is a fortified temple and is adorned with various carvings and sculptures in typical Rajasthani architecture. Many mythical stories are associated with the Varaha Temple. The belief in the wild boar incarnation is popular among them. Therefore the idol inside the temple is a wild boar headed and the body of a human. The Varaha Temple Pushkar timings are morning 6 to 12 and evening 4 to 8.

History


According to Varaha Temple Pushkar history, King Anaji Chauhan, the grandfather of King Prithviraj Chauhan built the temple in the 11th century. But later during the Mohammed Ghori invasion, the temple was demolished. It was then reconstructed by Rana Sagar. In Jahangir Nama, it is also mentioned that Jahangir demolished the Varaha Temple Pushkarand then dumped the idol in Pushkar Lake. The temple was again rebuilt by another Indian Emperor. But the temple was again demolished during the Aurangazeb invasion. Raja Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur reconstructed the temple in 1727.
 

Architecture


The Varaha Temple Pushkar has a huge entrance that you can see from a distance. There are 40 stairs to reach the temple. The main idol of Lord Varaha is placed in the shrine, which you can see when you enter the temple. The temple is fortified and has various sculptures, carvings, life-size statues of doormen, and gold-plated pillars of the mythical bird Garuda. The architectural style of the temple is mostly the Rajasthani Haveli style. But you can sense that the temple has gone through multiple demolitions and reconstructions during its life.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
