History

The Bishop's House was built in 1506 as the residence of the Portuguese Governor. The building was taken over by the Dutch after their invasion in 1663. It was taken over by the Vernedes family after the British invasion.

Dom Jos Gomes Ferreira, the 27th bishop of Kochi, bought it in 1888 and renamed it the Bishop's House. Ferreira was a powerful man whose territory included Burma, Malaya, and Ceylon, in addition to India.

Architecture

The Bishop's House, with its unique huge Gothic arches and pillars, stands amidst beautiful vegetation and oozes beauty that grows with each passing century. Though successive bishops have made numerous changes to the House since 1888, the basic arrangement has remained unchanged. The various broad halls, living rooms, wooden stairs, stained glass windows, marble plaque on the main staircase, and other features have preserved its distinct appeal.

A series of 36 paintings are displayed on the huge walls of the Bishop's House. From the advent of the Portuguese through the founding and flourishing of the diocese, these paintings reflect historical events that led to the formation of the Catholic Church in Kerala.
