History
It was formerly the home of a Maharaja and is now Kerala's greatest archaeological museum. Thrissur was the capital of the Cochin kingdom and the royal office before Tripunithura. The royal dynasty of Cochin, on the other hand, followed a matrilineal tradition. This means that the queen was the state's sovereign and that the king was subject to her authority. After 1775, the queen and her advisers relocated to Tripunithura, thereby relocating the capital to the new city. Later, the monarchs began to prefer staying at Tripunithura, prompting the construction of a new royal office in 1865. Courthouses, secretary offices, and other governmental and residential structures were built over time.
The royal family ultimately handed up the majestic Hill Palace to the Kerala government in 1980, and the Department of Archaeology was given custody of it. The palace was transformed into a museum, and it was first opened to the public in 1986.
Architecture
The Palace-turned-Museum has lately undergone some renovations. The palace complex is surrounded by a two-meter-wide walkway. The pathway is illuminated by decorative cast-iron pillars with ornate lighting. A total of 200 lampposts have been installed to illuminate the area in the early morning and late at night. Aside from that, the already beautiful door has been restored, replaced, and embellished with wood carvings.
It is constructed in the typical Kerala architectural style. Oil paintings, murals, stone sculptures, manuscripts, inscriptions, coins, royal goods, and royal furniture, including the simhasana, are on show in the full-fledged Ethno-archaeological museum (throne).
