History
Shree S N Goenka, a well-known Vipassana meditation teacher, proposed the Global Vipassana Pagoda in Mumbai as a way to raise awareness about Dhamma, or Buddha's teachings. The goal was to instill those fundamental truths in people's thoughts and help them live better lives. He believed it was important for world peace and harmony to be restored. The planning for this Global Pagoda Vipassana center began in 1997, but construction did not begin until 2000. And in 2006, the first of the three domes, which is also the largest, was finished. Since then, the bone relics of Gautam Buddha have been stored here.
By 2008, the two smaller domes had been completed, and the Global Pagoda temple was open to visitors and worshipers. Shree Goenka hoped that the pagoda will aid in the dissemination of Dhamma teachings as well as awareness of the Vipassana meditation technique. In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan award for his achievements.
Architecture
The dome of the Vipassana Pagoda in the world is roughly 29 meters tall. The pagoda's inside is hollow, serving as a meditation hall for 8000 people to practice Vipassana meditation, as taught by Shree S N Goenka. The overall height of the structure is 96.12 meters. The structure of the Global Vipassana Pagoda covers 13 acres and is a combination of Buddhist and Burmese elements. The pagoda's shape is comparable to that of Myanmar's Shwedagon Pagoda, and it's painted in a gold-colored paint. The spire is encrusted with actual gold that the Burmese have donated. A big crystal adorns the top of the piece.
The Global Pagoda is built on a basalt foundation. The dome is composed of sandstone blocks that weigh roughly 600-700 kg each and are held together with interlocking bricks. The decorations on the wooden entrance doors will attract your eye as well as the stunning Global Vipassana Pagoda architecture. They were carved by hand in Myanmar.
