During the night, the view of dargah fascinates people from the distance and is a divine sight to watch. 

The Tomb of Haji Ali Mumbai is a beautiful representation of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture which is built of glass. A marble yard contains the central Shrine. The tomb within the mosque is endowed by an enchanting silver frame and marble columns and is roofed by a brocaded green and red cloth. The main hall has several marble pillars which are inscribed with beautiful creative mirror work. These pillars have blue, green, yellow chips of glass inscribed in several designs and Arabic patterns which spell the ninety-nine names of Allah. There are different praying rooms for ladies and gents as per Islamic customs.

History


A 15th century Sufi Saint, Sayyed Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari was a rich businessman from Uzbekistan. Before essaying the spiritual tour to Mecca who abandoned his worldly wealth. Another story about Haji Ali is that he left for India after being upset for days about seeing a poor lady and decided to spend his remaining life spreading and teaching Islam in India. 

This Dargah along with the mosque was built in the year 1431, in honor of his death. It's his wish to bury his body where after dropping his “Kafan” (Shroud) resurfaces after being dropped in the sea. His shroud resurfaced in the Worli Bay in the middle of the Arabian sea so his followers built his tomb there. 

In 1916 the structure underwent a series of renovations and new additions after the Haji Ali Dargah Trust took over the management charge of the Haji Ali Mumbai Dargah. In the mosque and Dargah, a lot of reinstallations and redecorations were carried out in 1964. Along with the entrance gate, a three-storey Shrine was authorized in the complex in 1980. In 1990, the pathway that connects the Dargah was relaid. After all the restorations the memorial thus came to occupy 5000 sq. m.

Architecture


With the beautiful Arabian Sea in the backdrop, the shrine of Haji Ali is built on a small island some 500 meters away from the main coast. This beautiful area of the Dargah is spread over an area of 4,500 sq. meters and it is 85 feet tall. The architecture of Haji Ali Mumbai is itself a marvelous piece of the Indo-Islamic style of design. The road to dargah gets immersed in high tide making it entirely inaccessible due to its location. The shrine has a central dome that is flanked by four smaller spires in the four corners made out of stunning white Makrana Marble which is also used in the construction of the Taj Mahal. 

In the years 1960 and 1964, the dargah and the Mosque underwent numerous renovations and the new Shrine was built in the place of the old one. The present building has two floors which have the main mausoleum of Saint Haji Ali, a place for the ladies, a qawwal Khana, and toilets. In the center of the dargah there lies the tomb of the Saint which is covered in the red and green colored cloth called “Chaddar”. The main hall has several marble pillars which are inscribed with beautiful creative mirror work which has engraved the ninety-nine names of Allah with the beautiful glasses.
