History
Maharaja Bahadur Singh established the Hidimba Devi mandir in 1553 AD around a rock wherein Devi Hidimba meditated. Hidimbi was assumed to have resided there along with her sibling Hidimb, although little is documented about their family. Hidimba, who also was raised into a Rakshasa lineage, swore to marry somebody who would vanquish her brother Hidimb, who once was exceptionally strong and fierce. So when Pandavas were in banishment and reached Manali, Bhima, one of the 5 Pandavas, murdered Hidimb, her brother. Hidimba subsequently married Bhima and gave birth to a baby boy Ghatotkacha.
Hidimba remained in Manali after Bhim and the other 4 Pandavas had departed to watch after the empire. After Ghatotkacha reached adulthood, Hidimba stepped down from the monarchy and retreated into the woods to devote the final years of her life to meditation on a rock practicing rigorous penance to remove her demonic existence. After several years of devotion, she was rewarded with the honor of a deity.
Architecture
The Hidimba Devi Temple features ornately decorated wooden doors as well as a 24 m wooden Shikhar above the temple. The tower has 3 square timber-tiled domes and a 4th brass conical roof at the apex. The main door carvings are based on the earthy deity, Durga. creatures, leaf patterns, dancers, incidents from Lord Krishna's lifetime, and Navagrahas are also portrayed.
