About Hidimba Devi Temple Manali

Hidimba Devi Temple, also named Dhungri Temple and occasionally even as Hadimba Temple, is situated near Manali, a town located in Himachal Pradesh. This is a prehistoric cave shrine dedicated to the wife of Bhima, Hidimbi Devi, a character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Hidimba Devi is indeed an unrecognized Mahabharata figure. She exemplifies a brave and committed lady. Her shrine is now one of Manali's prominent tourist hotspots. Hidimba's human essence set her apart from all other demonic beings. She was never a malevolent force resembling her brother Hidimb; instead, she was cooperative and polite.

There at the edge of the Himalayas, the Hidimba Devi location is flanked by a cedar forest termed as Dhungiri Van Vihar. The Hidimba Devi Temple Manali is constructed on top of a giant rock that protrudes from the earth and was revered as an icon of the goddess. Maharaja Bahadur Singh erected the building in 1553. Residents who admired her built a shrine in her honor. Hidimba Devi is now regarded as a goddess, and her shrine is now one of Manali's most renowned tourist sites. Yet, it is not only the legend of the demon-turned-Goddess that has captivated people but rather the incomprehensible magnificence of the shrine that has left everyone spellbound.

History

Maharaja Bahadur Singh established the Hidimba Devi mandir in 1553 AD  around a rock wherein Devi Hidimba meditated. Hidimbi was assumed to have resided there along with her sibling Hidimb, although little is documented about their family. Hidimba, who also was raised into a Rakshasa lineage, swore to marry somebody who would vanquish her brother Hidimb, who once was exceptionally strong and fierce. So when Pandavas were in banishment and reached Manali, Bhima, one of the 5 Pandavas, murdered Hidimb, her brother. Hidimba subsequently married Bhima and gave birth to a baby boy Ghatotkacha.

Hidimba remained in Manali after Bhim and the other 4 Pandavas had departed to watch after the empire. After Ghatotkacha reached adulthood, Hidimba stepped down from the monarchy and retreated into the woods to devote the final years of her life to meditation on a rock practicing rigorous penance to remove her demonic existence. After several years of devotion, she was rewarded with the honor of a deity.

Architecture

The Hidimba Devi Temple features ornately decorated wooden doors as well as a 24 m wooden Shikhar above the temple. The tower has 3 square timber-tiled domes and a 4th brass conical roof at the apex. The main door carvings are based on the earthy deity, Durga. creatures, leaf patterns, dancers, incidents from Lord Krishna's lifetime, and Navagrahas are also portrayed. The shrine's interior is dominated by a massive boulder, with only a 7.5 cm tall brass picture of the goddess Hidimba Devi discernible to the worshippers.
