About Jehangir Art Gallery Mumbai

Jehangir Art Gallery Mumbai is one of the most famous venues for artists to demonstrate and showcase their work, and it is located in Kalaghoda in Southern Mumbai. Cowasji Jehangir supported the gallery's establishment, and it has served its artistic interests since its inception in 1952. The gallery, named after Sir Cowasji's late son Jehangir, has displayed works by well-known artists such as M. F. Hussain and S. H. Raza.

Previously, the Jehangir Art Gallery was housed in a massive mansion. The gallery now consists of four halls, including the Exhibition Gallery, Auditorium Hall, Terrace Art Gallery for photography and visual art, and the Hirji Jehangir Gallery, all of which have all of the necessary equipment to display various media of visual art. The prestigious gallery exhibits up to 300 exhibitions per year.

Artists who are unable to attend the gallery present their work on the sidewalk outside the gallery, which is an unusual phenomenon. This place is well recognized for its magnificent art shows, making it a paradise for art aficionados. Because of the grandeur of this art location, artists may have to wait up to two years to launch their displays here. The Jehangir Art Gallery timings are also very convenient.

History

Jehangir Art Gallery, founded in 1952, is one of Mumbai's most venerable institutions dedicated to the promotion of art and culture. Sir Cowasji Jehangir, 2nd Baronet, a prominent member of the Parsi community in Bombay at the time, was the primary supporter of the cause. Sir Cowasji's friends, renowned artist K. K. Hebbar and famous nuclear physicist Homi Bhabha, urged him to do it in memory of his late son.

Jehangir Art Gallery is a massive presence among the independent galleries and art stalls of Kala Ghoda, a hub of modern creativity in downtown Mumbai, as well as a colossal institution of the city's art and culture. The building was dedicated on January 21, 1952, by B. G. Kher, the then-Chief Minister of Bombay. Over the years, the Jehangir Art Gallery Mumbai has hosted several notable artists, including M. F. Hussain, Akbar Padamsee, Anjolie Ela Menon, and K. K. Hebbar. With its many shows and exhibitions throughout the year, particularly the Monsoon Art Show, it has also supported and enhanced young and upcoming artists.

Architecture

Jehangir Art Gallery, designed by Durga Bajpai, is one of the city's oldest and most historic concrete structures. It was established in the Fort region of Mumbai, right in the center of the city's creative district, behind the well-known and popular Prince of Wales Museum, now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya.

Exhibition Galleries 1, 2, 3, and the Auditorium Hall, as well as the Hirji Jehangir Gallery and the Terrace Art Gallery for Photography and Visual Art, are currently housed within the Jehangir Art Gallery complex. Over the years, all of these galleries have seen some incredible work. It is a prime example of an inward-looking art gallery in terms of interior design, reflecting the architectural ideas of the period. One can not resist seeing Jehangir Art Gallery paintings.
