History


Kanheri Caves Mumbai has a long and illustrious history associated with their name, which is very popular among Buddhists. These caves have a huge role in the spread of Buddhism in the region. The word Kanheri has been originally derived from the Sanskrit word "Krishnagiri" which simply means black mountain. The Credit of this name goes to sites black basaltic stone, which provides this attraction a unique look that is quite prominent against its surroundings. The amazing feature of this cave is that it is formed from a single rock bed.

Between the 9th and the 1st centuries BC, these caves were an important Buddhist learning center and a pilgrimage site for the Buddhist monks. The huge congregation halls with the large stupas show how important were these caves as a Buddhist shrine and the focal point of Buddhist settlement during the 3rd century. Kanheri Caves became one of its kind institutions for Buddhist congregational worship, study, and meditation. 

Architecture


These caves were carved out of basalt rock formations. Kanheri Caves showcases amazing ancient Indian religious architecture, which is quite similar to other cave structures of India like Elephanta, Ajanta, Ellora, and the others. During the Hinayana period, the construction of these caves begin and their influence on the architecture can be seen.

The caves which were constructed later have a fusion of Mahayana period architecture and iconic Buddhist religious architecture. Most of the beautiful sculptures of this region were built during the Mahayana rule. Water cisterns can be found in almost all the caves, which leads to everlasting water supply even during the peak summer. Some of the inscriptions available here, mention the construction of a dam.

Great service and friendly team

Our Rajasthan trip was very unorganized and from day 1 we need to argue for each committed hotel and details. Driver and hotel were not informed in advance and we need to pay 12000/- for the forceful event at the hotel which was never informed to us.
