History
Though no one knows for sure, shepherds from the nearby hamlet are thought to have discovered the Swayambhu Shanaishwara statue from time immemorial. It is thought to have existed since the Kali-yuga.
The narrative of the Swayambhu statue has been passed down through the generations as follows: When the Shepherd touched the stone with a sharp rod, the stone began to bleed. The herders were taken aback. The entire hamlet soon assembled to witness the miracle. Lord Shanaishwara arrived in the dream of the most faithful and religious among the shepherds on that night.
He introduced himself to the shepherd as "Shanaishwara." He also revealed that the mysterious black stone is his swayambhu form. The shepherd prayed to the Lord, asking if he should build a temple for him. Lord Shani Mahatma responded that there is no need for a roof because the entire sky is his roof, and he prefers to be outside in the open air. He demanded that the shepherd do daily pooja and 'Tailabhisheka' every Saturday. He also vowed that there would be no dacoits, burglars, or thieves in the hamlet.
